Cipro, an antibiotic used to treat various types of bacterial infections, has been linked to several adverse side effects. Although it is hard to predict which Cipro patients will experience side effects, doctors say that the likelihood of side effects increases the longer Cipro is taken. According to manufacturer-funded studies, Cipro side effects may range from mild to life-threatening, and the vast majority of Cipro side effects relate to metabolic-nutritional problems and the central nervous system. Some of the less-serious side effects that Cipro may cause include:

• nausea or vomiting
• dizziness or drowsiness
• blurred vision
• sleep problems (insomnia)
• joint stiffness or muscle pain
• increased skin sensitivity to sunlight

Serious Cipro Side Effects

Cipro has been linked to various serious side effects, some of which may be life threatening. For example, toxic epidermal Necrolysis (TEN), a potentially fatal skin condition, is a possible side effect of Cipro. Another serious side effect of Cipro is tendon rupture, an extremely painful side effect that requires surgery and months of rehabilitation. Other serious Cipro side effects may include:

• seizure (black-out or convulsions)
• confusion or hallucinations
• depression
• sudden pain or swelling near your joints (especially in your arm or ankle)
• diarrhea that is watery or bloody
• urinating more or less than usual
• numbness, tingling, or unusual pain anywhere in your body
• chest pain, pounding or fast heartbeats

People at Greatest Risk for Cipro Side Effects

Studies show that about 9% of Cipro patients experience side effects. Those at greatest risk of suffering Cipro side effects include:

• runners, weight-lifters, or any athletes or workers who put a lot of pressure and strain on their joints;
• tea and coffee drinkers
• small children
• expectant mothers
• the elderly or anyone with a weak immune system
• heavy alcohol drinkers or those with a history of liver problems
• diabetics
