The Kugel Mesh Hernia Patch is used to treat inguinal hernias, which occur when tissue pushes through a weak spot in your groin muscle causing a bulge in the groin or scrotum. This condition can be painful, especially when you cough, bend over or lift a heavy object. In many people, the muscle weakness that leads to an inguinal hernia occurs at birth when the abdominal lining does not close properly. Other inguinal hernias develop later in life when muscles weaken or deteriorate due to factors such as aging, strenuous physical activity or coughing. Although far more men develop inguinal hernias than women, no one is immune from developing inguinal hernias, including infants, pregnant women, and older adults.

Kugel Mesh Hernia Patch & Ventral Hernias

The Bard Composix Kugel Mesh Hernia Patch is most commonly used to repair ventral hernias, hernias in the abdominal region. Ventral hernias are also sometimes called incisional hernias because they usually arise in the abdominal wall where a previous surgical incision was made. Ventral hernias occur when the stomach muscles are too weak to hold the intestines, and as a result, the muscle wall ruptures, allowing the intestines to protrude.

Usually ventral hernias can be repaired surgically by stitching the stomach muscles back together. However, this type of surgery is not practical if the stomach muscles are too weak or thin, for example, due to post-surgery scar tissue. When surgery is not an option, the hernia is often repaired with a Composix Kugel Mesh Hernia Patch. The Kugel Mesh Hernia Patch is folded and inserted into the body through a small incision where it is then placed between the intestines and the stomach muscles. The “memory recoil ring” inside the Kugel Mesh Hernia Patch springs open, allowing the Kugel Mesh Hernia Patch to lay flat once in place. A properly working Kugel Mesh Hernia Patch helps repair the hernia by providing support and keeping the intestines inside the abdominal cavity while the stomach muscles have a chance to heal.

Bard Composix Kugel Mesh Hernia Patch Recall

To date, the Bard Composix Kugel Mesh Hernia Patch has been subject to 3 different recalls because the “memory recoil ring” that allows the patch to be folded for insertion and later spring open once in place can break off inside the body. This can lead to:
