Trasylol Heart Attacks
Trasylol, a drug injected during open heart surgery to reduce blood loss, has been linked to an increased risk of heart attack. In fact, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2006, Trasylol significantly increases patients’ risk of heart attack.

The study also suggested that Aminocaproic acid and Tranexamic acid, two generic Trasylol alternatives, do not increase the risk of heart attacks. These generic medications are significantly cheaper than Trasylol and are equally effective. Bayer, Trasylol’s manufacturer, dismisses the study findings claiming their clinical studies show no increased heart attack risk for Trasylol users.
How Trasylol Causes Heart Attacks
Heart attacks occur when blood supply to the heart stops. This deprives the heart muscle of oxygen. Oxygen deprivation causes cell death in a process called infarction, which in turn causes heart tissue to die and stops the heart from functioning. In order to reduce blood loss during heart surgery, Trasylol destroys the natural anti-clotting enzymes in the blood. The destruction of these enzymes may lead to blood clots that block blood flow. A heart attack will occur if blood clots in an artery and blocks blood flow to the heart.
