Yasmin and Yaz are both low estrogen birth control pills marketed by Bayer Healthcare. Like many other birth control pills, Yasmin and Yaz use a combination of estrogen and progestin to prevent pregnancy. Yasmin was approved by the FDA in 2001, while Yaz, which contains less estrogen, was approved in 2006. According to the New York Times, these pills together generated about $1.8 billion in 2008, positioning them as the “go-to drug brands for women under 35.”
While the estrogen in all birth control pills is known to increase the risk of certain side effects, such as heart attacks, blood clots and strokes, Yasmin and Yaz may also carry some health risks not seen with other contraceptives. This is because Yasmin and Yaz use a new progestin called drospirenone. Drospirenone can increase the levels of potassium in the blood, which can lead to a disorder called hyperkalemia. This condition may result in potentially life-threatening side effects, including cardiac arrest and kidney failure.
Bayer currently faces at least 74 Yasmin and Yaz lawsuits. The lawsuits allege that the new progestin drospirenone contained in the birth control pills increases the risk of serious and potentially life-threatening side effects, including heart attack, stroke, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, gallbladder disease and sudden death. The Yasmin and Yaz lawsuits also allege that Bayer overstated the benefits of Yasmin and Yaz and failed to adequately warn consumers about serious Yaz and Yasmin side effects.
